A Moderate Risk (level 4 of 5) of Severe Weather is in place over the heart of Tornado Alley. Today has the potential to be a big day out on the plains for large, destructive hail, as well as some potentially strong, long-tracked Tornadoes. Our Severe Weather Team is in the field and will be live starting at 3PM CT/4PM ET on Facebook Live and Youtube!
Spent yesterday afternoon and evening out in the Permian basin tracking down severe weather. Here are some highlights from that effort.
I was joined by my friend and colleague Dr Hal Needham and appreciated his assistance!
Even though it is only early May, we are seeing signs that we might have to watch for development potential as we head towards the end of the month. Long range guidance suggests a favorable pattern setting up, so we will need to keep an eye on the SE Pacific as well as the SW Caribbean.
Mark covers this, plus a look at severe weather and flooding, all in today's video discussion.

Before we get to hurricane season, we have to deal with severe weather.
Our new project to study the effects of hail continues this year and I’ll be back out in search of huge frozen hydrometeorites tomorrow and Tuesday.
The target area will be west Texas somewhere within the “ENHANCED” area as seen on this screen capture from the SPC site.
My goal is to collect and measure the largest hail stones I can find while also using remotely operating cameras to record their (literal) impacts.
I’ll be streaming live here and via our YouTube channel beginning at 3pm ET tomorrow.
Tune in and join me as I hunt potentially large and destructive hail in Texas.

With hurricane season approaching, we thought it would be appropriate to inform you about the list of names that will be used this year.
Note that Dexter replaces Dorian from 2019.
How far down the list do you think we will get? Do you share a name with any of the names on the list?

Welcome to May! With hurricane season approaching I wanted to post some important new info regarding rip currents that the NHC and NWS have been working on.
Check out this post and let me know if you’ve ever had to deal with a rip current or know someone who has. They can be deadly and the more we are aware of them, the safer we will be.
