HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SUMMER!

Photos from Smith County Humane, TN's post 06/20/2026

๐Ÿšจ DID YOU KNOW THAT FEMALE CATS CAN GET PREGNANT AS YOUNG AS 4 MONTHS OF AGE? ๐Ÿšจ

This means that kittens can have kittens, creating even more unwanted litters in our community.

Pregnancy is especially hard on these young mothers because they are still babies themselves and are not fully grown. The good news is that this cycle can be prevented. Cats can be spayed as early as 2 pounds, helping to prevent unwanted pregnancies and improving their long-term health.

Please be part of the solution. If you need assistance getting your cat spayed or neutered, contact Smith County Humane. We may be able to help.

Together, we can reduce the number of unwanted litters and give cats a healthier, safer future. โค๏ธ๐Ÿพ

Meet Kara.

Kara came to us as an owner surrender and desperately needed medical care. She had not seen a veterinarian since she was a puppy. When she arrived, she was suffering from a severe ear infection. Her ear was filled with black yeast and drainage, and she was clearly miserable and in pain.

Kara also has a tumor hanging from her stomach that needs to be removed. Our veterinary bill is already over $300, and her surgery and dental work are expected to cost at least another $500.

As if that wasn't enough, Kara also tested positive for Ehrlichia and Lyme disease and is currently receiving medication and treatment.

Despite everything she has been through, Kara is a sweet 7ยฝ-year-old girl who deserves a chance to live a happy, healthy life.

If you can spare even $5, it will help us provide the medical care Kara needs.

Kara will be available for foster or adoption after her surgery on the 24th of this month. If you are interested in giving Kara a loving home, the first step is to fill out an application:

โš ๏ธ WARNING: ALL CAT OWNERS!! Bobcat Fever Has Been Found in the Area! โš ๏ธ

Bobcat Fever (Cytauxzoonosis) has been reported in our area and can be rapidly fatal to cats if not caught and treated early.

The disease is spread by ticks, making tick prevention one of the most important things you can do to protect your cat. It is crucial to give flea and tick medication exactly according to the manufacturer's directions and to keep your cat on prevention year-round.

Signs of Bobcat Fever may include:
๐Ÿพ Loss of appetite
๐Ÿพ Lethargy or weakness
๐Ÿพ High fever
๐Ÿพ Difficulty breathing
๐Ÿพ Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes, gums, or skin)

If your cat shows any of these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment can improve the chances of survival.

Please make sure your cats are up to date on their flea and tick prevention, and share this post to help spread awareness and protect pets in our community.

๐Ÿš— Volunteer Transporters Needed for TNR! ๐Ÿพ

This week, we're looking for volunteers to help with animal transport for our TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) program. Transportation is a very important part of helping community cats live healthier lives.

This past month, we have been overwhelmed with the number of cats and kittens in Smith County needing assistance. A big part of our work is transporting these animals to veterinary appointments for spay/neuter surgeries and medical care, then getting them safely back to their foster homes to recover. Once healed, most are returned to the properties they came from, where they can live healthier lives without contributing to unexpected litters.

If you have a few hours available on Mondays and/or Thursdays and would like to help, we would love to hear from you! Your time can make a huge difference in the lives of these animals.

To volunteer, please fill out an application:

Even a few hours a week can mean the world to these animals and help us continue making a positive impact in our community. โค๏ธ๐Ÿพ
