Community-based, non-profit membership organization focusing on historic preservation. Carthage Historic Preservation was formed in 1978.

Since its founding, CHP has established three historic districts with over 600 structures listed on the National Register, rehabilitated two Victorian properties off the Carthage Square, and purchased and restored the historic Phelps House. The Phelps House is available for event rentals. Today, CHP remains committed to educating citizens about the cultural and economic benefits of historic preservation in our city. Join us in our quest to save what makes Carthage so special.

This is a wonderful example of salvaging and recycling historic materials. Preservation is the original green movement. The materials, labor, and energy invested in constructing older buildings have already been used, resulting in significant carbon savings compared to new construction. Preservation not only safeguards the past but also protects the future.
