What Changes When You Take Yourself Out of the Story and Look Through the Eyes of God?

Everything.

When I look at my life through my own eyes, I see what people did to me.

When I look through God’s eyes, I begin to see what He is doing in me.

Through my eyes, I see rejection.

Through God’s eyes, I see refinement.

Through my eyes, I see betrayal.

Through God’s eyes, I see exposure.

Through my eyes, I see loss.

Through God’s eyes, I see preparation.

Through my eyes, I see people who failed me.

Through God’s eyes, I see people who revealed what was hidden in my own heart.

God is rarely as interested in changing the people around me as He is in transforming the person within me.

That realization changes everything.

The person I blamed becomes the instrument God used to expose my pride.

The person who rejected me becomes the instrument God used to reveal my need for approval.

The person who abandoned me becomes the instrument God used to teach me that my security cannot be found in another human being.

The person who disappointed me becomes the instrument God used to uncover unrealistic expectations.

What if the greatest purpose of the struggle was never to change them?

What if it was to change me?

When I view life through the eyes of self, I ask:

“Why did they do this to me?”

When I view life through the eyes of God, I ask:

“What are You teaching me through this?”

One question leads to bitterness.

The other leads to wisdom.

One keeps me trapped in the courtroom of accusation.

The other invites me into the classroom of transformation.

God is not surprised by the people who hurt us.

He is not pacing heaven trying to figure out what went wrong.

Before the offense occurred, He already knew it was coming.

Before the betrayal happened, He had already made provision for it.

Before the rejection arrived, He had already determined how He would use it for our good.

Nothing enters the life of a child of God without first passing through His sovereign hands.

That does not mean God causes evil.

It means He wastes nothing.

Not the betrayal.

Not the abandonment.

Not the disappointment.

Not the tears.

Not the years.

Nothing.

The eyes of God see beyond the moment.

We see the chapter.

God sees the entire story.

We see pain.

God sees purpose.

We see delay.

God sees timing.

We see loss.

God sees pruning.

We see suffering.

God sees eternal glory being formed within us.

Looking through God’s eyes also changes how we view others.

The person we called selfish may actually be wounded.

The person we called cruel may actually be broken.

The person we called rebellious may be running from pain they do not know how to face.

The person we condemned may be fighting battles we cannot see.

Suddenly, judgment begins to give way to compassion.

Not because sin is excused.

But because we recognize that apart from the grace of God, we too are capable of wandering.

The cross changes perspective.

At the cross, no one gets to be superior.

No one gets to be the hero.

No one gets to be the victim.

We all stand in need of mercy.

The question is no longer:

“Who is wrong?”

The question becomes:

“Father, what are You trying to teach me?”

When we take ourselves out of the center of the story, God finally takes His rightful place there.

And when God becomes the center, everything changes.

Pain becomes purpose.

Offense becomes opportunity.

Loss becomes growth.

Suffering becomes refinement.

And what once looked like the end of the story becomes the place where God was writing His greatest work all along.

Perhaps the greatest freedom comes when we stop asking God to change the people around us and start asking Him to reveal what He is trying to change within us.

For the eyes of self look for someone to blame.

But the eyes of God look for someone to transform.
