Good morning from FirstWatch Collaborate Live in San Diego — some great images from Wednesday, but another strong agenda today, ranging from practical applications of data to the people and leadership behind meaningful change in public safety.

We’ll be looking at some fascinating real-world uses of FirstWatch data — school threat triggers, commissioner dashboards, election polling-location alerts, geo-fencing to identify crime patterns such as wildfire arson, and demand analysis examining unit-hour utilization through a consumption model. It’s a useful reminder that the value of data isn’t simply collecting it; it’s recognizing patterns early enough to do something about them.

We’ll also hear from Blair Sadler, JD, who led Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego for 26 years and now advises healthcare boards on patient safety, quality and crisis transparency. Blair joins FirstWatch Improvement Guide Mike Taigman for a candid conversation drawing on PLuck, the book Blair co-authored with his twin brother, exploring practical ways to create meaningful change and become a high-impact leader — regardless of title or position.

Good morning from Collaborate LIVE!

We will shortly be getting underway in Mission Bay, San Diego , and there’s another strong day of discussion, learning and—appropriately—collaboration ahead.

Coming up today, we’ll be looking at AI, cybersecurity and the changing way we work. AI is allowing people and teams to move faster and accomplish more independently—but that can also create silos, increase the potential for miscommunication and make trusted partnerships and cybersecurity more important than ever.

We’ll also hear the early lessons from Guilford County EMS, 90 days into its whole blood program. What have they learned? What are they measuring? And, perhaps most importantly, what questions should an EMS system be asking as it considers or implements a whole blood program?

And there’s a fascinating leadership and communication discussion ahead on how we communicate across professional boundaries. The language that works within public health, academia or healthcare doesn’t necessarily translate when working with community leaders, policymakers, funders or other stakeholders. Effective leadership means understanding the audience, the motivation and the message—not simply speaking the language we know best.

Three very different subjects, but with a common thread: how we adapt, communicate and collaborate as our world becomes increasingly complex.

Twenty-five years ago, on September 11, 2001, the world changed forever.

Today, FirstWatch pauses to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost in New York City, at the Pentagon in Virginia, and aboard Flight 93 in the skies over Pennsylvania. We remember the passengers, crews, workers, families and ordinary people whose lives were taken in an act of unimaginable violence.

We also honor the firefighters, EMS professionals, law enforcement officers, military personnel, dispatchers, healthcare teams and countless others who ran toward danger, cared for the injured, searched for survivors and served their communities in the days, weeks and years that followed. For many in public safety, the impact of 9/11 did not end that day; its physical and emotional consequences have continued across a generation.

Twenty-five years later, the responsibility to remember remains.

We remember those we lost.
We honor those who served.
We stand with the families who still carry that loss.

Never forgotten.
