Baby ferns!!!

Here we see a bountiful cluster of teeny, heart shaped gametophytes (aka โ€œprothalliaโ€), phase one of their lifecycle. And then in the upper left of the photo: the emergence of a first, itty bitty sporophyte. Thatโ€™s phase two of the lifecycle, what will grow into the big plant we recognize as a fern.

For most native plant species, we recommended starting the seeds outdoors, and in the winter. Ferns are different! These we start on a windowsill, covered, in a sterilized plastic container. More propagation info is in our Resource Library:
