In 2023, 7 men became the first people to earn college degrees through Yale’s Prison Education Initiative.

Their achievement carried a powerful message. Education can reach people in places many forget, and second chances can still create real change.

One graduate had already been released, but he returned to celebrate with the others, showing how meaningful the moment was for everyone involved.

Their graduation was not just about earning degrees. It was about dignity, growth, and the belief that a person’s future can still be rebuilt.

Their story shows that education can open doors even in the hardest circumstances.

Period!!

Born on July 17, 1935, Diahann Carroll became one of the most important barrier-breaking performers in American entertainment. She built a career across Broadway, film, television, and music at a time when Black women were often limited to stereotypical roles.

In 1962, Carroll became the first Black woman to win a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for *No Strings*. She later made television history starring in *Julia*, one of the first network TV shows to feature a Black woman in a leading role that was not a maid or servant.

Diahann Carroll’s success helped open doors for generations of Black actresses. Her legacy is one of talent, elegance, persistence, and breaking through spaces that were never designed to include her.

Twelve years ago today, Eric Garner was murdered by New York police officers. His life was stolen, and his final words, “I can’t breathe,” became a rallying cry against police violence and the systemic injustices that persist to this day.

As we honor his memory, we continue to stand with his family and refuse to let his name be forgotten.

On a day already heavy with grief for our community, we’re reminded why this work remains crucial.

Say his name.
