Infielders: How do you fix heavy feet?? A lot of infielders fail to understand to prep step. Typically heavy feet results from a “go, stop, go” prep step. Here infielders will typically sync into their heels, stop their momentum, completely turn off their engine, and wait for the ball to be hit. From here they have to fully restart their momentum and attack the ball, leading to late and slow movements. Usually this results from an early landing in the prep step or simply a lack of understanding in how to achieve a reactive prep. In order to be as reactive as possible we have to land when the ball crosses the plate or directly after the ball crosses the plate, not before. We have to land on the balls of our feet, and as soon as we hit the ground we bounce in the direction that the ball is hit. This move is immediate and is connected to the ball’s flight. The eyes tell us how and when to move. The game dictates our movements. In order to get to this flow state we have to understand how and when to land in our prep step.
