PARTING GIFT: FITTING IN AMERICA by
Leonard Suryajaya Parting Gift: Fitting in America explores family portraiture as a space where private life meets the structures that govern national belonging. Drawing on staged photographs made between the U.S. and Indonesia, the work asks who gets to be recognized as "family" in America - and on whose terms. With the artist living in the U.S. while his family remains in Indonesia, the portraits reflect the ongoing effort required to sustain relationships across borders. By placing his family alongside Amish families, gun-owning Americans, and chosen kin, the project expands family beyond biology, using queerness as a lens for imagining alternative forms of kinship and care.
