student Sarah Anderson recreated the subject of her final project, "The Secret Map of Singapore," an object in and her hometown, as a way to explore how it was made but also scrutinize the connections implied. This act of making not only allowed her to confront a lot of Western misconceptions of Singapore, but study the object more closely to shape her ideas about how colonialism lives on through mapmaking.

Making is often dangerous. Alonso Ramos Gavilán's "Miracle at the Stamp Mill" from Historia del celebre santuario de Nuestra Señora (1621) shows an indigenous worker who was thrown under the stamp press (where silver ore was crushed) by his supervisor. In the top right corner, the Virgin Mary intercedes on his behalf. Clearly commenting on colonial structures of power, the print also tells us about . The scene takes place at a stamp mill: a complex machines used for grinding silver ore in the 16th-18th centuries that was powered by a complex water system feeding water to this location high in the Andes. Thanks for this amazing find!

In Titus Kaphar's work, "Jaavon and the Unknown Gentleman" (2011), the operation of cutting becomes a historical intervention. By citing Ralph Earl's 18thc painting "Gentleman with a Negro Attendant" (slide 2), Kaphar shifts our attention to the historically marginal figure, not only returning agency through a name, but also providing a true portrait instead of a type. Commissioned as an intervention for their collection, you can see this work at the New Britain Museum of American Art (2011.56). This work will definitely be on my mind this coming week for the conference at ! @ New Britain Museum of American Art
