The Best of Car Talk #2645: Stink Bug
Ashley called us to say that when she takes long trips in her ’74 Volkswagen Bug, she feels nauseous and has trouble staying awake. Sounds like a drive with Click and Clack after a chili dinner, but could this be more serious? Listen now: https://monkeylink.co/935f1d

Dear Car Talk:
You often recommend synthetic motor oil for cars. How do they make synthetic oil? Most modern products are made from oil, plastics, etc. What do they make synthetic oil from?

Your vehicle’s model year (MY) is more than just a marketing tactic. There is an actual reason behind it. Early in automotive, especially just prior to World War II, model years were used to create urgency for consumers to buy. Especially in the post-war “keep up with the Joneses” consumerist atmosphere in the United States. Model years have gone beyond that, however, and are now used for a myriad of reasons. Learn more:
What the Model Year Actually Means - Car Talk Car Talk automotive experts take a closer look at the model year of cars, how they came about, and what they actually mean.

Dear Car Talk:
My 2011 turbocharged Volkswagen CC 2.0L has a rear bearing seal that is leaking oil. But I'm being told by my mechanic that it's also leaking air! He says this causes computer problems, which illuminates the "Check Engine" light.
Can you explain this to me? I've never heard of an engine leaking air.
