Daily House Talk

You don't have to be the greatest preacher, evangelist, pastor, or worship leader of all time to be remembered. You simply have to be consumed with Jesus.

When we first meet Mary of Bethany, we find her sitting at the feet of Jesus. While Martha was busy serving and working, Mary was captivated by something else. She wasn't focused on what she could do for Jesus; she was fascinated by who He was. She sat at His feet, listening to every word He spoke and gazing upon His beauty.

Then in Mark 14, just days before the cross, we see Mary once again. This time she takes what was probably the most valuable possession she owned. The perfume was worth nearly a year's wages—what many would consider their life savings today. Without hesitation, she breaks the alabaster jar and pours it all out upon the One she loved.

Immediately, a fragrance filled the room. Not only the fragrance of the expensive perfume, but the fragrance of a heart completely surrendered to Jesus.

Some looked at her and saw waste. Some thought her devotion was excessive. Some believed it cost too much.

But Jesus saw something different.

He saw love.

So much so that He said, "Wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her."

Think about that. Mary didn't travel the world preaching. She didn't build a ministry. She didn't write a book. She simply became fascinated with Jesus.

People may think your love for Jesus costs you everything. They may think your passion, worship, and devotion look foolish. But when you truly encounter the One who left heaven to come after you, who gave everything to bring you home, you realize there is no cost too great.

The more you see His beauty, the less concerned you become with the price.

May we be a people who are not known for our accomplishments, but for our affection toward Jesus.

Daily House Talk

I used to get ideas about building things around my house, and the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to do it. So I would start with the vision I had seen and work day after day after day building it. Most of the time I would do it all by myself because I didn’t want to bother anybody or ask for help. I figured if I could do it alone, I would save money and get it done my way.

In the end, yes, it usually turned out good. It looked great. But I was worn out, exhausted, and tired from working nonstop trying to finish what I had seen in my mind.

Now when I look back, I realize something. If I would have asked for help or hired someone to come alongside me, it probably would have been finished quicker, and I would have had a whole lot more rest.

I believe our walk with God can become the same way.

Once we encounter Christ and begin to see what God has called us to, many of us immediately go to work trying to build it ourselves. We work ourselves to death trying to grow spiritually, trying to become better, trying to make God happy, trying to earn what has already been freely given.

But all along, Christ has already finished the work.

God didn’t just give us a vision — He gave us His Son. Jesus already paid the price. He already fulfilled what we could never fulfill on our own. He already gave us the Holy Spirit to help us walk this thing out.

Our own effort will eventually wear us out.

But resting in Christ changes everything.

Rest allows us to trust Him instead of striving. Rest allows us to lean on His strength instead of our own. Rest allows us to stop trying to build righteousness through performance and simply abide in the One who already completed the work.

And when we truly rest in Him, growth still happens. Transformation still happens. Fruit still comes.

Not because of our exhausting effort…but because Christ is living and working through us.

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”— Matthew 11:28
