Mustang Facts Monday 🐎🍂

Fall officially begins tomorrow… but your horse’s body has already gotten the memo.

While we’re pulling out the sweaters and noticing cooler mornings, mustangs have been preparing for the change of season for weeks.

And surprisingly, it isn’t simply colder temperatures telling them winter is coming.

It’s the changing daylight.

As summer fades and the days become shorter, decreasing daylight triggers hormonal changes that influence a horse’s seasonal coat cycle. That means the process of growing a thicker winter coat can begin before those truly cold winter days arrive.

Pretty incredible, right?

🍂 Shorter days signal seasonal change
🐎 The coat begins becoming longer and denser
❄️ Longer hairs help trap insulating air near the body
🌾 Their bodies gradually prepare for colder months ahead

For wild mustangs, that seasonal preparation matters.

There’s no heated barn waiting when the temperature drops. Their bodies have adapted to respond to the natural rhythms of the environment- daylight, weather, forage, and the changing seasons.

And if your horses are already starting to look a little fuzzier lately…

they know. 😂

Tomorrow may be the first official day of fall for us, but the horses have been reading the season in the sunlight all along.

Here’s to cooler mornings, fuzzy mustangs, changing leaves, and one of our favorite seasons at the ranch. 🍁🐎

Meet Bobby Ashley, owner of Wild Horse Leather Worx

Bobby creates handcrafted leather goods rooted in true Western tradition, from custom tack and one-of-a-kind leather pieces to fully custom saddles built for both horse and rider.

His saddles are where craftsmanship and horsemanship really come together. Each one is created with attention to fit, function, durability, and the details that make a saddle uniquely yours. It’s genuine craftsmanship-the kind that takes time, skill, and a whole lot of respect for the trade.

There’s something different about real, handcrafted leather… the smell, the feel, and the character it develops over time. Every cut, stitch, and detail carries the mark of the person who made it.

Mustang Facts Monday

We’ve covered this before but with all the new followers, we decided to touch base here again…

Ever noticed the strange symbols on the neck of a mustang? They actually tell a story.

Mustangs and burros removed from public lands by the Bureau of Land Management receive a freeze mark before adoption.

And it isn’t just an identification number.

The mark uses a system of symbols based on the International Alpha Angle System, and it contains information that can help identify that individual animal.

A BLM freeze mark can tell you:

🐎 That the horse came through the federal Wild Horse & B***o Program
📅 The animal’s estimated year of birth
🔢 Its individual registration number

Unlike a hot brand, a freeze mark is created using extreme cold. The cold alters the pigment-producing cells in the hair follicles, causing the hair to grow back white rather than destroying the skin with heat.

You’ll typically find the mark on the left side of the neck, tucked beneath the mane.

So when you look at that little collection of unusual symbols, you’re looking at more than a brand.

You’re looking at a permanent piece of that mustang’s history.

From wild horse… to an individual with a number… to, hopefully, a horse with a name, a person, and a whole new chapter ahead. 🤍

Our wonderful volunteer, Alyson was busy with Dakota and while helping groom the burrs out had a realization:

“Burr-u-tifal day! After I picked burrs out of Dakota's mane and forelock, he turned to the other side, saying to me "don't forget my other side please." This reminded me of the fact that a horse has two sides! Something I learned from MAP.”

All too often we forget that when working with horses, we must always repeat on each side, as what feels familiar and comfortable on one side may feel completely different on the other.

Horses don’t automatically generalize an experience from left to right. Something they’ve learned, accepted, or become confident with on one side may need to be introduced and practiced again on the other.

Whether it’s grooming, leading, yielding, saddling, desensitizing, or simply asking them to stand quietly- both sides matter.

And apparently Dakota was happy to remind Alyson of that himself. 😂
“Excuse me… you missed a side.”

We love these little moments around the ranch because sometimes the best lessons aren’t part of the plan. They happen while picking burrs out of a mane, spending time together, and listening to what the horse is telling us.

Horsemanship is built in the little moments.
