š The Disease You Don't See Coming: Histophilus somni
Many cattle producers focus on respiratory viruses, but one bacterial disease often flies under the radar until it causes significant lossesāHistophilus somni, commonly referred to as "Somnus."
Somnus is a naturally occurring bacterium that can cause a variety of serious health problems in cattle, including pneumonia, septicemia, myocarditis (heart inflammation), arthritis, reproductive issues, and sudden death. In many cases, affected cattle may show only subtle signs before rapidly becoming critically ill.
Stress plays a major role in outbreaks. Weaning, transportation, commingling, weather changes, and other management events can weaken the immune system and create the perfect opportunity for Somnus to take hold.
The economic impact can be significant. Beyond death loss, Somnus infections can lead to reduced weight gain, increased treatment costs, lower feed efficiency, and decreased overall herd performance.
The good news is that vaccination is an effective tool to help protect your herd. Vaccines such as Bar VacĀ® 7 Somnus can provide protection against Histophilus somni while also helping guard against several other important cattle diseases. Including Somnus protection in your herd health program can be a valuable investment in both animal welfare and profitability.
As fall processing, preconditioning, and weaning season approach, now is the perfect time to review your vaccination protocol and ensure your cattle are prepared for the challenges ahead.
At Calhan Feed, we're happy to help producers select the right vaccines and herd health products for their operation. Stop by, give us a call, or send us a message with any questions.
A strong vaccination program today can help prevent costly losses tomorrow. Protect your herd. Protect your investment.

š Don't Wait Until You See Blackleg ā By Then It's Too Late.
One of the most devastating diseases we see in young cattle is Blackleg. The scary part? Healthy-looking calves can be found dead with little to no warning.
Blackleg is caused by naturally occurring Clostridial bacteria that can remain dormant in a calf's muscle tissue. When conditions are right, the bacteria rapidly multiply, producing toxins that cause severe muscle damage, lameness, swelling, fever, and often sudden death. Unfortunately, treatment is rarely successful once clinical signs appear.
The good news is that Blackleg is highly preventable.
Routine vaccination with a quality 7-way or 8-way Clostridial vaccine is one of the most cost-effective management decisions a producer can make. For just a few dollars per head, you can help protect your herd from Blackleg and several other deadly Clostridial diseases that can impact performance, profitability, and herd health.
Whether you're processing spring calves, preparing for weaning, or developing replacement heifers, now is the time to review your vaccination program.
At Calhan Feed, we carry trusted cattle vaccines including Bar VacĀ® 7 and other herd health products to help keep your cattle protected and productive.
Stop by the store, call us, or send us a message if you have questions about developing a vaccination program for your herd.
