Happy Juneteenth! This day marks an important date in African American history: June 19th, 1865, when all remaining slaves in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas were declared free. This was two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.
We encourage everyone to take this day to learn about the historical significance of Juneteenth, and a great way to do that is to read a book! We have several books in stock to help children understand why we celebrate Juneteenth, which became a federal holiday in 2021:
- The History of Juneteenth: A History Book for New Readers
- Celebrations & Festivals: Juneteenth
- Celebrate the World: Juneteenth
- The Juneteenth Alphabet
- They Built Me For Freedom: The Story of Juneteenth and Houston’s Emancipation Park
- Opal Lee and What it Means to be Free
Another great resource is the National Museum of African American History and Culture: nmaahc.si.edu

The Summer solstice is almost here! June 21st is the ☀️official☀️ first day of Summer, and we couldn’t resist showing off these two beautiful books about this interesting time of year! Take a look around the world to see how people from other countries observe the solstice. (Did you know that when it’s Summer in the United States, it’s Winter in Australia?)

I read a lot of picture books, and this one really impressed me!🩷 This is “The Marvelous Doctors for Magical Creatures” by and !
I loved the world of this book; there’s even a creative map in the front! The story is centered around Glitterbug, a unicorn who lives in Dewdrop Meadow with all of the other unicorns. Glitterbug is having a persistent tummy ache, so she goes to visit Ava’s dads in town who are both doctors of magical creatures. When they can’t figure out the problem, Ava volunteers to help get to the source of Glitterbug’s tummy ache.
When Ava arrives in Dewdrop Meadow, it’s obvious that all the unicorns like parties, pink sparkly things, and rainbows! But Glitterbug doesn’t seem to be like the other unicorns. She’s hesitant to reveal her true self at first, but once she opens up and embraces what makes her unique, her tummy ache goes away!
This is really the heart of Pride: living authentically.🩵

🚨Heads up, Byron Center!🚨
84th Street from Byron Center Avenue to Homerich Avenue will be CLOSED for approximately 3 weeks. This will unfortunately mean our street parking will be unavailable until the construction ends. The best way to get to us will be through the back parking lot which you can access through Sherwood and Freeland.
As much as the construction is needed, these kinds of projects can really put a damper on foot traffic for little shops, so please still come see us and our neighbors if you can!🩷

Happy last day of school, Byron Center!🥳
We thought this was a good time to post a reminder about our store rules. If you could share these with your students, we would really appreciate it. We had some craziness today and want to make it clear what the expectations are for behavior in our shop.
- Please no ice cream cones or open drinks.
- No running, yelling, or horseplay. We don’t expect you to whisper, but we need to be able to hear the phone ring and help customers who have questions. We do not want anyone to injure themselves or another person by playing roughly.
- Do not take things that are not yours. This applies to store merchandise of course, but we also had a student’s umbrella stolen today. Please respect your classmates.
- Respect the merchandise. We’re not a library, so when customers come in to buy things, they expect the products to be in brand new condition. We can’t have stuffed animals or books being handled to the point that they no longer look new.
- Do your best to put items back where you found them or give them to a bookseller. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it helps us find items when other customers are looking for them.
- Be kind! Please avoid using foul language, and if you don’t have anything nice to say, you don’t have to say anything at all.
These rules are to help keep our store a calm, inviting place for all, not because we’re big meanies. We love when students like to come in!
Thank you!!
