Something a little different coming out of the shop….. This curly maple and burl rocking cradle is one of a kind. I have always wanted to couple walnut and maple this way. It’s a Mooney’s Custom for sure, there were no plans or examples anywhere. For color I went with a dye and alcohol. It’s the best way to enhance the curly twisty elegance of the wood. Like with many of my cutting boards the chatoyancy of the grain is what I’m after. Several hand rubbed coats of lacquer bring it all together. It swings smoothly and is very sturdy.

Super cool white shaker kitchen. Additional features are a beverage bar and window seat with cupboards on either side. This is that island top I made.

No fillers needed. Her is a 6” filler spice cabinet. It rolls out and closes softly. Cool and useful!

We made a couple of hard maple edge grain butcher block tops. Here’s the process if you want that true oiled finish. The hard maple strips are about 1 3/8” wide and almost 2” thick. They then get glued up and planed down to 1 1/2”. A strait piece of maple keeps everyone in line during glue up. The big one is 38” by 103” long. It has to be glued up in 3 sections since the planer can only accommodate 15”. The finished product is heavy and quite strong. I used over 1/2 gallon of block oil on the big one. It takes some time to saturate the maple, but it seals it up nicely. Only a couple screws hold it down so it can float. Quite a bit of work!!
