Garrett Animates

It’s been a minute since I’ve shared any studio work so I thought I’d share some shots I animated on Strange World! I play a lot of board games so definitely relate to Ethan’s frustration here lol. I remember one of the challenges with this shot was struggling to manage all the different cards and making sure they hooked up between shots (esp. because the whole point is the game is unraveling 🥲). Looking back at these shots I forgot how wacky/cartoony the poses were. And even throughout the whole movie — I feel like Strange World had a really fun animation style to it!

Did you know pigeons are notoriously bad at making nests? I thought this detail fit in perfectly with this caller’s clearly frustrated voicemail 🤣. This voicemail was a lot of fun to animate — I never thought I’d get to design a ‘working mom’ pigeon outfit lol.

I’ll be animating at Netflix for a while!

As many of you know, I’ve been deep in my independent animation work this year — building Chirpmail, running Patreon and exploring what it means to make stuff completely on my own.

While I keep developing that side of things, I’m also excited to be joining Netflix! And for the first time in my career, I’m working on the same animated film my wife has been boarding on for a while which is so cool ❤️!

✏️I use drawing to help me work out complex mechanics, thumbnail ideas, and even ‘supervise’ my own work (and I’m not actually good at drawing lol). Doing drawovers really helps you break down things more graphically and get out of the messy CG world which can limit how you think about your animations! Check out the full video now on Patreon!

I feel like if I had to distill my animation growth into a super dumbed down formula, it would be something like: Fear + Fun = Growth. Fear gets a bad rap, but I think it can be used to help you improve -- but it's also a fine line because you don't want to beat yourself up too much... And speaking of fear and growth -- This is kinda my first deep dive into longform videos! I had a lot of fun making it, I hope to do more like this. Waddya think???
