The theme of the day was, "Educational Transformation for our Workforce and Local Economy. The goal was to create a space where they could discuss and outline alliances and understanding around how students can be adequately prepared and qualified to fill various high quality career positions in HIM (Health Information Management) and HIT (Health Information Technology). The colleges were ask questions around specific programs they offer; degrees and certifications and awards offered; accreditation body of their programs; internship/job placement opportunities/; and partnerships they have forged. The industry representatives addressed common job titles and required skills for each position within their organizations; minimum and desired requirements for these positions; what prior industry experience are they seeking in these employment positions; and, their employment projections for five and ten years. In small groups table discussions address and reported back to the entire body the following issues: what role could industry/community colleges play in helping prepare HIT/HIM workforce; what may impede their ability to support HIT and HIM programs; how can industry and community colleges align to the skills we previously discussed during the day; and, what courses/training could be presented at the high school level?
