Located in the heart of downtown Buffalo, the WNY Book Arts Center is a community print shop and studio for letterpress, screen printing, book binding, paper making, calligraphy, origami, and more! We are a nonprofit organization and a working museum dedicated to preserving the book arts through collaboration and innovation, bridging antique equipment and processes with modern artmaking techniques, and celebrating the heritage of Buffalo’s’ printing industry. We are proud to act as a hub to create and foster a collaborative community by providing opportunities to artists and educators, and all those in creative pursuits.

Next week at Book Arts: Woodblock Relief Printmaking workshop with SuDI Wang!

Explore relief printmaking by carving into woodblocks to create monochromatic prints. We’ll focus on your relationships with the wood and tools as printmakers. No previous printmaking experience is required, and all skill levels are welcome.

Complete and understand relief printmaking basic processes. Projects will be one or two layers of woodblock print on Kozo paper, one design per student, and around 10 final prints per person, with woodblock print sizes around 3’’ x 4.5’’. The final print could be used as an individual art piece, postcard, bookplate, etc!

*** This is a two class workshop. Participants must attend both class dates.***

This past spring, we hosted an exhibition by Sudi, featuring her printmaking work, titled Where is Momo? You can still find some of her mini-momo prints in our artist shop! Snag one next time you visit!

Thank you to all who came through to celebrate, learn, teach, make, shop, and support local book artists & printmakers with us!

We can’t wait to keep inking it up with you this fall!

Also opening tonight (Friday, Sep 18 from 5-8pm) in our Studio Gallery: Amanda Maciuba’s Natural Mythologies. On view through Oct 17th.

Amanda’s exhibition is the result of her time as Book Arts’ Studio Artist Resident this summer.

In Amanda’s words: “The prints in this exhibition show expected landscape and environmental landmarks that I grew up with in and around the shores of Lake Erie, particularly a family cottage in Long Point, Ontario. This work is the initial foray of a longer study on how human management has impacted the introduced and native species in the Great Lakes region, and how this has evolved and changed the landscape over time. These prints specifically deal with mussels, wetlands and a natural phenomenon called garnet sand.

Also on display as part of her exhibition will be a print she made during BookFest using a streamroller in the street.

Head to our website to learn more about Amanda and to read her residency reflection in which she goes into fascinating detail about the natural family mythologies that inform her work, as well as the “pressure printing” process she used to make the piece on display.

About Amanda:
Born and raised in the Buffalo, NY area, Amanda Maciuba (she/her/hers) graduated from the University at Buffalo with a degree in Visual Studies. She has a MFA in printmaking and a Certificate of Book Arts from the University of Iowa. Currently, she teaches printmaking, drawing and book arts at Mount Holyoke College in Western Massachusetts.

Amanda Maciuba’s work is concerned with the landscapes, communities, development practices and environmental practices throughout the United States. By reacting directly to the landscapes and environments she is living in at the time, her work examines, celebrates, and critiques place.

Through a combination of prints, drawings, artist’s books and digital media she calls attention to how human actions and climate change are transforming our current environment, and creates a space for mourning and reflection on the environments that are already irrevocably altered beyond repair.

Kathleen Sherin was at Book Arts yesterday helping with the installation of her exhibition, Disrupted! We talked a bit about the gorgeous deep blacks in her pieces and the years-long trial and error process that got her there.

She’ll teach some of her techniques at a two-part, hands-on Introduction to Silk Aquatint & Carborundum Collagraphic Monoprinting at Book Arts (which we’re sorry we told you about because it is currently full). Reach out if you’d like to be added to the waitlist though!

Join us Friday (Sep 18 from 5:00-8:00pm) for an opening. There will be refreshments! As long as we don’t dip into them first. We’ll do our best.

This exhibition is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
