Skillet’s first-ever Christmas song, “O Come, O Come Emmanuel,” shot to #1 on iTunes’ Rock and Christmas charts and even hit the Top 5 overall. But the heavy-rock finale sparked backlash, with some online calling it “demonic” and claiming it sounds like “the devil singing hymns.”

John Cooper isn’t bothered. He says critics are often sincere believers trying to protect their faith, but he’s seen God use Skillet’s music to bring hope to countless people—and the criticism only pushes him forward. Many others rallied behind the band, saying the intensity fits our longing for Christ’s return and that Skillet has proven their sincerity again and again.

Cooper emphasized that all music belongs to God. The devil doesn’t create—he distorts. Skillet is taking back what God made.
