12 SNMA members from the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences recently attended the National AMEC conference in Pittsburgh, PA.

It was powerful to be surrounded by students committed to excellence, service, and the mission. From networking to inspiring talks and professional growth, this experience was unforgettable. We also take the opportunity to celebrate our graduating alumni Sydney Johnson who attended the trip and participated in the SNMA graduate recognition ceremony.

SNMA’s BHM Spotlight honors Dr. Charles R. Drew

Dr. Charles R. Drew revolutionized modern medicine through his pioneering research in blood preservation and transfusion. His development of large-scale blood plasma storage and transport systems became critical during World War II and laid the foundation for modern blood banking. At a time when the world needed innovation and leadership, Dr. Drew delivered both with brilliance and precision.

Beyond his scientific achievements, Dr. Drew stood firmly against the racial segregation of blood donations, calling the practice unscientific and unethical. His courage to challenge injustice within the medical system reflects a legacy rooted in integrity and advocacy. Dr. Drew’s life reminds us that excellence and equity must go hand in hand, inspiring future physicians to lead with both skill and moral conviction.

SNMA’S BHM Spotlight honors Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler

Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler broke barriers as the first African American woman to earn a medical degree in the United States, dedicating her career to serving women, children, and newly freed individuals with limited access to care. At a time when both racism and sexism sought to limit her path, she answered with compassion, determination, and unwavering commitment to community health. Beyond her clinical work, Dr. Crumpler became one of the first African American women to publish a medical text, documenting her experiences in maternal and pediatric care.

Her legacy is not only one of historic “firsts,” but of service rooted in purpose. She showed that medicine is more than science. It is advocacy, courage, and a responsibility to uplift those most in need. Her work continues to inspire generations to pursue excellence while breaking barriers with grace and strength.
