Today, SMART Local 71 remembers the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honors the bravery of the first responders, service members, workers, and everyday citizens who stepped forward in the face of tragedy.

We will never forget their courage, sacrifice, and the unity shown in the days that followed.

There are multiple paths to becoming a member of SMART Local 71, and the right path depends on your skills, experience, and where you are in your career.

Some members come in as apprentices with little to no construction experience and learn the trade through our five-year apprenticeship program. Others may already have sheet metal or construction experience and come in as a classified worker or journeyperson.

The first step is simple: fill out an online application or reach out to our organizer, Adam Kerr, to learn more about your options.

SMART Local 71 partners with more than 30 contractors who perform different types of sheet metal work throughout our area.

The union hall acts as a hiring hall, helping connect our skilled members with those partnered contractors when they need a qualified workforce.

This gives our members access to multiple employment opportunities while giving contractors the benefit of trained, reliable sheet metal workers.

For members, union employment helps provide more than just a paycheck. Contractor contributions help support wages, healthcare and welfare benefits, retirement contributions, and continued training.
