Trumpeter Swan Farm

After cultivating onions decided they could use some extra water. Onions tend to be quite "thirsty" during their growing phase. Always nice to water after cultivating so the water can seep down into the soil and not just run off or evaporate.

In true Trumpeter Swan Farm fashion, the rain missed us. It seems the rain always tends to split apart when it get near us. Oh well, a perfectly good excuse to get into the field and cultivate. Here's the tractor cultivating our little radish sprouts. With not alot of w**d pressure and hot days ahead they should start growing fast.

Started planting this week. Started out with green onions and dry bulb onions. Both of them aren't to bothered by cool weather and high winds, so perfect reason to start with them. With some rather blustery and cool days coming we will hold off one other veggies until the weather starts to turn again. Also I know own waterering ahead of rain. I know it sounds silly. But dry bulb onions are water hogs and really need a bunch of water right at the beginning of their life.

In the winter all our big tractor does is drive the feed wagon to and from the barn once a month. We go through about 3.5 tons of feed every month feeding our laying hens.

Well with the temps dropping below what I've found Kale to be able to withstand, the plants are dead and frozen. That said I was a bit bored, and the chickens were sad about it being winter, so today I picked Kale for them. Just went out with the skid steer and manure forks and brought in the rest of the Kale in the field. Hopefully it brightens their day up a bit.

Wow I haven't posted in a while. But here is a big photo dump of our fall harvest highlights. With harvest season almost done, it was fun to see what all we did.

Out with the old, in with the new. No old produce goes to waste as our chickens love the extra produce. Moved out this week's old stock and moved in another load of fresh cantaloupes from the field.

Well onions sure do love the weather this year. With consistent weekly rains, low w**d pressure, and plenty of hot humid days the onions went wild. My estimate puts it at about 6000 to 9000 lbs wet weight out of the field in total. By far the best onions season on record. Took us 3 days to harvest them all. We ran out of space in the seed patio, so all the reds went on any wagon we had available and put into the high tunnel for drying down. At the end of harvest we went out to get Taco John's for lunch. Just as a treat for all the hard work.
