As this month’s lane splitting and lane filtering campaign comes to a close, one message remains important: ride predictably and prioritize safety.

In Texas, lane splitting and lane filtering are not legal and can create unexpected situations for both riders and drivers. Staying in your lane helps improve visibility, reaction time and space to respond to traffic conditions.

Did you know? Texas law limits motorcycle handlebars to no higher than the rider’s shoulder height when seated on the motorcycle. Proper motorcycle setup helps support safe handling and control. Before riding, make sure your bike meets legal and safety standards.

How can autonomous vehicle technology help improve roadway safety for motorcyclists and other vulnerable road users?

During the Forum, Bart Teeter and Andy Burnett of Bot Auto explored practical strategies for deploying driverless commercial vehicles responsibly, minimizing human error and enhancing detection and response around motorcycles and mixed traffic environments.

While vehicle technology continues to evolve, rider awareness remains essential. Stay visible, ride predictably and always watch for larger vehicles that may have limited visibility.

Motorcycle tires are a critical safety component, but tire wear and replacement costs are often underestimated. During the 2026 Texas Motorcycle Safety Forum, Daniel Hernandez of DBB Powersports shared new ways to help riders understand tire maintenance by comparing tire wear to fuel consumption.

Worn or aging tires can impact traction, braking and control. Before the next ride, take time to inspect tire tread, pressure and condition to help keep every trip safer.

Texas law allows motorcyclists to ride 2 abreast in a single lane with another motorcycle. However, riding more than 2 abreast in the same lane is not permitted. Ride aware, stay positioned safely and follow proper lane formation.
