Glynn County History—Do You Know about the Rev. Dr. Julius Caesar Hope?

Rev. Dr. Julius Caesar Hope was an African American pastor who worked tirelessly for equality during the civil rights movement. Rev. Dr. Hope was a graduate of Alabama State University and the Interdenominational Theological Seminary in Atlanta, where he earned his Master of Sacred Theology.

Rev. Dr. Hope was the Pastor of Zion Baptist Church in Brunswick from 1959-1970. During this time, Rev. Dr. Hope was instrumental in bringing life to the NAACP Chapter that had become dormant. By the end of 1962, Rev. Dr. Hope had increased the branch membership to 777 members. Rev. Dr. Hope was elected President of the Georgia State Conference on the NAACP in 1966 and served until being appointed as Director of Religious Affairs for the National NAACP in 1978.

Rev. Dr. Hope’s spirit of cooperation and vision of racial harmony was instrumental in bringing all races together as the Glynn county schools began desegregation in the late 1960s.

After leaving Glynn County, Rev. Dr. Hope was instrumental in Georgia politics. He continued to pastor churches both in Georgia and Michigan.

The NAACP established two awards in his honor: The Rev. Julius C. Hope Hall of Fame Award and The Julius C. Hope Champion on Social Justice Award in 2014.

Rev. Dr. Hope passed away in Brunswick, Georgia, on October 24, 2018. He is buried in Atlanta, Georgia.
