Today marks June 19, 1865, the day when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their freedom more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

It stands as a powerful reminder of delayed justice, enduring resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality.

It is a day for all to acknowledge, commemorate, and reflect upon our shared history. ❤️🖤💚

A brief timeline of emancipation:
�• January 1, 1863 – The Emancipation Proclamation declares freedom for enslaved people in Confederate states.
�• April 9, 1865 – The Civil War effectively ends with General Lee’s surrender.
�• June 19, 1865 – Union troops arrive in Galveston, Texas, announcing that enslaved people are free (Juneteenth).
�• December 6, 1865 – The 13th Amendment is ratified, abolishing slavery nationwide.

Today I kicked off my first youth event of the summer our Soccer Camp hosted by Coastal Outreach Soccer! ⚽️

It was amazing to see our campers sharpening their skills while also learning new techniques on the field. Their energy, focus, and teamwork made this a great start to the season!

Thirteen years ago, a young man from Brunswick, Georgia experienced a dream that so many young boys only imagine. Darius Slay Jr. was drafted #36 overall in the 2nd round of the NFL Draft and from that moment on, he never looked back.

He went on to have an incredible football career, proving his talent, dedication, and resilience on some of the biggest stages.

More importantly, his journey has inspired countless young boys right here at home, showing them that no dream is too big and that anything is possible with hard work and faith.

This past weekend, he chose to celebrate his retirement in the most meaningful way by giving back to the very city that raised him. That says everything about the kind of man he is.

Darius, the City of Brunswick is beyond proud of you. Thank you for representing us with excellence and for pouring back into your community.
