Hundreds of drones fly dangerously close to manned aircraft

(CNN)Hundreds of drones fly dangerously close to manned aircraft in U.S. airspace, forcing pilots to take evasive action sometimes, a new study shows.

Experts reviewed 921 cases involving drones and manned aircraft between December 2013 and September this year.

Of those, 327 incidents fall under the definition of close encounters, according to Bard College’s Center for the Study of the Drone.

It defined “close encounters” as drones coming within 500 feet of aircraft.

In close encounters, pilots “maneuvered to avoid a collision with a drone” at least 28 times, the study says. Such encounters involved various aircraft, including passenger jets and helicopters.

UAS Registration Task Force Day Three

UpdateNovember 5–The Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Registration Task Force completed its final day of meetings. The group focused on reaching a consensus on a recommended process for registration. The discussions included how an operator might prove a UAS is registered, how the aircraft would be marked, and how to use the registration process to encourage or require UAS operators to become educated on basic safety rules. The group also continues to gather data and analyze which types of UAS would need to be registered and which would not. The Task Force will now finalize its recommendations for delivery to the FAA Administrator by November 20.

FAA: Fly Safe With Your Drone

You’re heading to the stores on Black Friday to buy that shiny new camera-equipped drone you’ve been yearning for. You can’t wait to get into the sky and let loose your inner high-flying aerial photographer, right?

Did you know you’re also going to become a pilot?

When you fly your drone anywhere in the nation’s airspace, you automatically become part of the U.S. aviation system. Under the law, your drone is an aircraft. So while the rules for drones may be different, you have the responsibility to operate safely, just as a Cessna or 747 pilot does.

The FAA has developed this safety checklist (PDF) that you, as a pilot, should use whenever you send a drone into the Wild Blue Yonder. We want you to fly safe, fly smart – and have fun.
