My worries about the imagery of Bangladesh are why Ismail Ferdous’ Sea Beach, winner of the Oscar Barnack Leica Award 2023, gave me such a rush of emotion and uncomplicated pleasure. The book itself is an object of pristine beauty, bound in pure white and with the cover image, of a pink-shirted seller of spun sugar against a bright blue sky, reproduced with a subtle sparkle like the glint on the sands of a sunny beach.
