The official World Toilet Day, celebrated November 19, honors the humble loo, sanitation infrastructure, and the workers who protect human health and wellbeing. This year’s theme addresses the need for toilets that are fit for the future. That means toilets and treatment infrastructure that are resilient to climate change, and preparing citizens for what to do if / when floods or other disasters leave us without the toilets we’re used to. Founder Shawn Shafner ( ) will enjoy a week-long residency at The Soil Factory ( ) starting this Friday. This residency is a special opportunity to explore what was once an actual soil factory, work on new material, enjoy deep meditation and contemplation, spend time in nature (Ithaca’s gorges, right?!), and offer a few FREE opportunities to engage with members of the Cornell College of Agriculture and Life Sciences community ( ). Is there a better way to spend a beautiful fall day than touring a wastewater treatment plant? I, for one, do not think so. Yesterday, we got a tour of Conshohocken’s Wastewater Treatment Plant. It is amazing how much wastewater is processed on this one small site! And the true marker of a successful plant? A contained poo smell on a hot, dry day. 🍁🍂🍃 **p
