"Music is my life, it is in my soul, it runs through my veins. Music is my being. I am inspired by a lot of different things, my surrounding, my fans, and of course my mother. Music is God gift to me and my voice is my gift to my fans, to the world. I use it to express myself" Anie Alerte

"For me, photography has been a way to express myself and it has been very rewarding on so many levels. It has allowed me to deal with issues that are personal to me and it has connected me with many people, in Lebanon and in the US. I relate well to and enjoy photographing people and getting to know them and discovering them as we build this intimate relationship during our photo sessions. In this respect the process is the same with whomever I have been working with. Maybe the only difference is that with Women Coming of Age, there might be more layers to go through"

Maria Hiv Mejia is our woman crush wednesday! She is an HIV activist and a motivational speaker.
"I was infected at 16 years old in 1989 and diagnosed in 1991 as I mentioned before, so I can relate to the young and old. I have been HIV positive longer than I have been HIV negative. My forte is social media (International social media activist in HIV/AIDS and LGBT communities), but I am also very active in my community as a motivational speaker, tester, HIV educator, volunteer for the Red Cross as an HIV trainer and am part of several campaigns for lab companies, CDC, Health departments, radio, TV and magazines" Maria Hiv Mejia

"You can’t have violence in your mind when it’s calm. When you accept your situation, you accept the people around you. When your mind is calm and peaceful, you’re content. It’s only when you’re stressed out, you’re unhappy, you’re frustrated, that violence comes in the mind.”

Riva Precil- Traditional music and the Haitian Music Industry | fanmkanson 03/09/2017

Fanm Kanson: What’s your take on the Haitian Music Industry and its treatment towards women?
I don't feel women have gotten the right amount of love or exposure over the years as it is a male dominated industry although I see a shift occurring. There are a lot of female artists at the moment and many of them are booking big shows left and right so I'm happy to see that they're getting the shine they deserve Riva NYRI Precil

Tishaura Jones slams Post editorial board while declining interview 02/13/2017

"You just moved here. It isn’t your city, yet. And graffiti is not what’s killing it.

What is killing our city is poverty. Since you’re new and you live in a great neighborhood, you probably don’t know that the poverty rate doubled during Mayor Francis G. Slay’s 16-year tenure.

What is killing our region is a systemic racism that pervades almost every public and private institution, including your newspaper, and makes it nearly impossible for either North St. Louis or the parts of South St. Louis where African Americans live to get better or safer or healthier or better-educated"

First They Marched, Now More Than 13,000 Women Are Planning to Run for Office 02/12/2017

Of course, it’s still unclear whether the explosion of interest at ground level will yield results in, say, the 2018 election. Schriock is optimistic. “I see this as a new beginning,” she said. “I think you’re going to see a new generation of women leaders rise up and change this country.” But even if Schriock’s grand vision of the future fails to materialize, the women who run aren’t going anywhere — they’ll be right at the forefront of what seems likely to become a serious social movement. “The dominant culture has always framed us as submissive, but we’re not,” Anaya said. Women are resilient.”
