How long does a PSPS event actually last?

If a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) is called, power will remain off as long as the hazardous weather conditions persist.
Important: Power is not restored immediately when the wind stops! Before re-energizing the grid, utility crews must visually inspect all affected power lines—often by helicopter or on foot—to ensure no equipment was damaged by flying debris or fallen branches. Power is only restored when it is 100% safe.

How to Prepare:
- Keep mobile phones fully charged when high winds are in the forecast.
- Have backup charging options ready, such as battery banks or car chargers.
- If you rely on medical equipment that requires electricity, plan for backup power or alternative locations now.
- Be prepared to be without power for several days during a severe event.

💜 June is Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness Month 💜

On June 2, the Mono County Board of Supervisors formally proclaimed June 2026 as Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness Month, recognizing the importance of protecting some of our community’s most vulnerable residents.

Older adults make up approximately 25% of Mono County’s population and play an important role in the strength, character, and vitality of our communities. Yet each year, Mono County Adult Protective Services receives reports involving concerns of neglect, abuse, and financial exploitation affecting elders and dependent adults.

Throughout June, Mono County encourages residents to learn the signs of elder abuse, check in on older family members, friends, and neighbors, and help build a community where every person is treated with dignity, respect, and compassion.

Join Mono County in raising awareness by wearing purple on June 15 for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and helping spread the message that elder abuse has no place in Mono County. Together, we can strengthen community support systems and help prevent abuse and neglect before it occurs.

To make a report of a concern, please call the APS Hotline at 1-800-340-5411

What exactly is a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS)?

During peak wildfire season, you might hear about potential power shutoffs from Southern California Edison (SCE) or Liberty Utilities. But why do they happen?
A PSPS is a last-resort safety measure. When extreme weather hits our region—think high sustained winds, low humidity, and critically dry vegetation—the risk of electrical equipment sparking a wildfire skyrockets. To prevent this, utilities will proactively turn off electricity to specific, high-risk areas.

While losing power is frustrating, these shutoffs are designed to protect our community, our homes, and our local landscapes from devastating fires.
Don't get caught in the dark. Ensure you receive critical updates during severe weather by signing up for Ready Mono alerts at ready.mono.ca.gov and for SCE alerts at sce.com/psps.

Note for North County: For residents serviced by Liberty Utilities (The Walker-Coleville-Topaz Lake corridor), visit https://california.libertyutilities.com/verdi/residential for information on Liberty's Wildfire Mitigation and PSPS info.
