A yoga mat is thinner so that one can stand and balance properly. A Pilates mat is 1/2-inch thick with compact foam to provide more support for your sensitive body parts. A Pilates mat is dense so that it provides more support to the spine and stays firm on the wooden floor. Budget mats are often less dense.

The hip, one of the largest weight bearing joints in the body, is where the thigh bone meets the pelvis to form a ball-and-socket joint. The hip is surrounded and supported by the gluteals, quadriceps, hamstrings, adductors, and the iliopsoas muscle, with major nerves and blood vessels running through it. Why do hip issues seem to be so prevalent? And can Pilates help?
Pilates offers strengthening in that vast range of motion. Squats and lunges are awesome and so needed for function, but they only work in one plane of motion. Pilates, by providing lighter resistance, works in all the external and internal rotation and into full hip extension in a safe way.

One way to improve our mental health is to exercise.
Exercise has a positive effect on our mental health, both right away and over the long term. Pre-pandemic, there was already a shift to online fitness, but the pandemic really sped up the adoption of streaming workouts. While it’s very convenient to have a wealth of exercise modalities on our devices, connecting to an instructor through a screen can feel very isolating.
During this challenging time, how can the Pilates community offer support to others while also personally reaping the benefits of this practice we love so much?
The principles of Pilates are: Breath, Concentration, Control, Precision, Centering, Flow
Pilates demands focus. When the mind is focused on one thing, it leaves little space to take on other thoughts and things. Being mentally aware and present helps counteract our very human tendency to ruminate or worry.

Pilates teaches various breathing techniques to enhance relaxation, lower blood pressure, and to activate specific muscles that help improve posture.
Joseph Pilates believed that focusing on breathing was vital. “It is tragically deplorable,” he once said, “to contemplate the millions who have never mastered the art of correct breathing.”

During a bout of back pain, the last thing you might want to do is exercise. But for some people, it's just what the doctor ordered. While we all know that regular exercise is important for our overall health, stretching is often an overlooked component of our routine. For people with back pain, stretching exercises are especially important because they can help reduce back pain and may even help prevent future episodes of pain or injury. Correct technique is essential.
Regular stretching exercises help keep muscles and ligaments flexible. They can also reduce stress on joints and improve the flow of blood and nutrients throughout the body. Without it, stiffness, limitation of movement, and pain can occur or increase.
Stretching is also an important way to prepare the muscles for vigorous activities such as aerobics or playing a sport. That is why stretching exercises should also be done before and after a workout to prevent muscle strain and soreness and to help avoid injuries.
Be sure to talk to your doctor before starting any new exercise or stretching program to make sure there are no restrictions in the type of stretching you should do.

Exercises that work the back, shoulders, legs, and hips are the most beneficial for people with osteoporosis.
Specialists say the most damaging type of injury one can incur is a fracture of the hip, and strengthening the hips should be a big goal.
However, people with osteoporosis should avoid Pilates exercises that involve bending forward or rolling on their backs, and should be very cautious about performing exercises that involve twisting the spine.

Core strength and stability are at the center of Pilates, which works the whole body to improve posture, balance, flexibility and strength. The core is comprised of the pelvic floor, transverse abdominis, diaphragm and multifidi along the spine, which, when properly engaged, work together to create the effect of a nice snug corset.
The core holds up your spine. On top is the weight of your head, shoulder girdle and upper body. Then, you need to have mobility in your legs. In Pilates, we bring the top and bottom together through the core. If your core is weak, your upper body is not supported, your spine starts to shrink and hunch, and that affects your gait. As we get older, keeping the right posture through proper core engagement makes all the difference in quality of life.

Pilates is much more than a set of exercises. The techniques and principles behind Pilates can be taught in different ways, for different reasons, and with varied objectives. You may want to gain strength, relax, improve your posture, recover from an injury, or be more flexible, and Pilates can help you achieve any of these.
