Advocating for family businesses doesn't stop at the office—it reaches all the way to Capitol Hill. Consulting & Advisory Partner, Lacy Willis, CPA, JD, CFE, CVA, recently represented LSL at the Congressional Family Business Caucus in Washington, D.C., as part of our sponsorship of Family Enterprise USA.

The event connected family business leaders, members of Congress, and policy experts to discuss how family-owned businesses can access the capital needed to fuel growth, create jobs, and successfully transition to future generations.

One of the highlights of the trip was spending time with Tim Schultz, Paige Kavooras, and Tim Hemstreet—three passionate champions of family businesses. Plus, a big congratulations to Tim Schultz on his appointment as CEO of Family Enterprise USA and FEUSA Action! We can't wait to see how his leadership helps move FEUSA's mission forward and strengthen the voice of family businesses nationwide.

We're incredibly excited to support Family Enterprise USA and the important work they're doing to elevate the voices of family business owners in Washington. Family businesses face unique opportunities and challenges, and they deserve advocates who understand their impact on communities, employees, and the economy.

What do Vikings, trolls, dirt bags, mermaids, inflatable bananas, and a whole lot of accountants have in common? Day #3 of the LSL Firm Retreat!

Our Firm Retreat Crew Wars competition brought out everyone's creativity as teams transformed their assigned colors into full-blown identities. From Vikings in Black and Blue Trolls to the Brown "Dirt Bags," mermaid wigs, inflatable yellow costumes, and plenty of other unforgettable characters, the competition was fierce from the very beginning.

Teams battled it out through trivia, Minute-to-Win-It games, team challenges, and plenty of friendly trash talk—all while supporting a great cause. The winning crew earned the opportunity to direct our charitable contribution to an organization of their choice.

The costumes were ridiculous. The competition was intense. The laughter was nonstop. And the teamwork reminded us exactly why one of our core values is Accomplish More Together.

When a Section 1031 Like-kind Exchange Isn’t the Right Fit 05/21/2026

A 1031 exchange can be a powerful strategy for real estate investors — but it’s not always the only path forward. In this new blog, LSL Partner Justin Jensen, MBA, CPA, breaks down several alternatives investors may want to consider depending on their timing, liquidity needs, and long-term goals, including cost segregation, installment sales, Opportunity Zones, and partial exchange strategies.
