Picture of me and M swimming. This his third time this year visiting the pool and he’s already a rockstar at blowing bubbles and recognizing when he is about to go underwater. All of these skills came from his daily bathtub practices.
My goal as a swim instructor is water safety first. I’m teaching maven those skills that are going to save him one day.
Every year, even when I teach, I see parents putting floaties on their kids and letting them go in the water by themselves. Which, I get it, parents want some space. But just last week, I saw a child unzip his own life jacket and was about to slip out in the water - kids are clever and more capable than you think! Most of the time, kids don’t like wearing life jackets/floating because it’s bulky and they feel like they have no control of what they want to do in the water.
Life jackets and floaties are great, I encourage the use of them outside of lessons for play, but it’s not a solution or reason to become unaware of the dangers of the water.
Here are some of my tips for a safe day at the pool.
1. be within arms reach of non-swimming children.
2. Stay in an area where children can stand
2. Plan some family games to play
3. Practice swimming skills - 💦 splashing, blowing bubbles 🫧 , floating…
4. Sing songs (ask me for suggestions)
5. Bring some of their favorite toys 🛻

With such an amazing swim season, I often forget to spend time with my own family out at the pool. Thanks for the pic!
I get many question about Maven and his future swim endeavors, but I just want him to know how to be safe in the water. Right now, it’s all about fun and play to get comfortable in the water. Most of our practice is actually during bath time! When we get to the pool, he’s not super affected by the large amount of water and we do the same exact skills that we’ve practiced :)
Since last week’s post, A is now able to flip on her own for breaths! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Every time she swam out and got out of her starfish float she yelled “LOOK AT HOW FAR WE SWAM!!”
Just shy of 10 lessons with me and this guy is almost swimming across the pool on his own. I remember J’s first two lessons.. he REALLY didn’t want to get water on his face. I’m super proud of how far he’s come in swimming! .wang.10
I love the sound of sloshing water! A great way to get warmed up is to start kicking. Nothing super fancy, just sit on the first step or at the edge of the pool and play a fun game of red light, green light!
Here we have twins J & J, getting ready for their morning lesson! .wang.10
T getting the hang of controlling his breathing so he can shoot farther on his streamline. Amazing focus this guy has! With some previous swim experience and 5 lessons with me, he’s on his way to swimming across the pool!

Here’s J learning how to swim. Sometimes it takes a little extra motivation with some water friends to show us how to practice new skills.
One of the first things we do is learn how to kick. Here is a snapshot of J kicking with just a little bit of support :)
