History lesson time! 🎨✨ One of our incredible artists, Stacey Herries, uses a painting technique called Encaustic, which dates back to the 5th Century BC! Encaustic painting is created by mixing pigment with melted beeswax and then fusing each layer with heat. The Ancient Greeks originally used wax painting to protect and decorate their ships, and the technique was later evolved by the Romans and Egyptians to create art. Some of the most remarkable examples are the Egyptian Fayum mummy portraits, many of which have survived for nearly 2,000 years with their colors still beautifully preserved. Altitude Gallery owner, Amy, was just in London and visited the British Museum, where she saw an encaustic mummy portrait dating to around 100 AD—still stunning after all these centuries. How amazing is that?! Swipe to see Amy’s photo! ➡️
