What happened in Utah is coming to your state next. This is part one of two. A state agency called MIDA just approved a massive data center and gas plant on private ranchland in Box Elder County, backed by Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary. MIDA was created for one job: redeveloping old, unused military land near bases. A 20,000 acre data center on private farmland is not that. Under Utah Code 63H-1-202, MIDA wrote itself out of the rules. County land use laws do not apply. City rules do not apply. Health codes and business licensing do not touch it. It has statewide reach, it never expires, it holds police power as though it were a city, and it can use eminent domain to take property and even the groundwater underneath it. It is the government, the regulator, the tax collector, and the business partner all at once. Part two answers the obvious question: who is checking them. Follow so you do not miss it.

For days now, the streets of Tirana have filled with Albanians who refuse to stay quiet. The chant echoing off the buildings is blunt: "Albania is not for sale." Police have answered with water cannons, and the clashes have only grown.

What set it off is a luxury development backed by Jared Kushner's investment firm, Affinity Partners, and tied to Ivanka Trump. The plan would push coastal construction into the protected Vjosa-Narta lagoon, a designated wildlife reserve, and build a resort on Sazan island, a former communist-era military base off the Albanian coast.

Environmental groups say the damage is already visible. They report habitat destruction inside the protected zone, including a mapped sea-turtle nesting site that sits in the path of the project. For a lagoon that shelters migratory birds and rare coastal ecosystems, conservationists warn the build-out could be irreversible.

The pushback isn't only in the streets. Albania's special anticorruption prosecutor has opened an investigation into the deal, raising hard questions about how a foreign-backed luxury project landed inside one of the country's most protected natural areas.

Supporters frame it as investment and jobs for a developing economy. Protesters see something else: a wealthy, politically connected venture carving up public land that was supposed to be off-limits. As the crowds keep returning, the fight over who Albania's coastline belongs to is far from over.

With midterms just months away, the DOJ has canceled election‑integrity training for prosecutors and FBI agents, so the very people who should know how to spot and prosecute election crimes are being kept in the dark. They also deleted a 281‑page internal guide on how to prosecute election offenses — the playbook for enforcing the law against ballot stuffing, illegal coordination, and other election crimes. On top of that, they fired most of the lawyers in the Public Integrity Section and still haven’t replaced the director of the Election Crimes Branch, the unit that has overseen federal election crime cases for decades. At the same time, the administration is demanding massive troves of voter data from states and trying to build a national voter database to purge people from the rolls, while voting rights groups are literally in court right now trying to stop it. So when Trump goes on TV and says, “If you don’t have honest voting, you can’t really have a nation,” remember this is the same administration that is gutting the team that actually prosecutes election crimes, shutting down training, and erasing the manual on how to enforce the law. If you were trying to make it easier to cheat and harder to catch you, this is exactly the roadmap you’d follow. This is what authoritarianism looks like in America: scream “fraud” on TV, sabotage the enforcement infrastructure behind the scenes, then claim you’re the only one who can fix the crisis you deliberately created. I have never seen a politician fight this hard to cling to power instead of doing the bare minimum to reassure the country that our votes will be counted and our voices will matter.
