As we observe World Autism Awareness Day, let's remember that everyone experiences emotions differently. For many autistic individuals, understanding and managing these emotions can be a unique journey.
The Zones of Regulation have been a helpful tool for many, providing a common language to discuss feelings. Imagine being able to easily identify if you're in the calm Green Zone, the slightly agitated Yellow Zone, or the overwhelmed Red Zone. This awareness is the first step towards finding helpful strategies.
Let's commit to learning and using tools like the Zones of Regulation to better support autistic individuals in our lives.

π Unlocking the World of Sensory Regulation for Your Little One π
Hey Super Parents and Caregivers! π Let's dive into the wonderful world of sensory regulation - a key to unlocking your childβs potential! π§©
β¨ What is Sensory Regulation?
It's all about how our kiddos process and respond to sensory information from their environment. This includes touch, sound, sight, and even movement. Sensory regulation is crucial for helping children feel comfortable, focused, and ready to tackle new challenges. π
π Signs to Look Out For:
- Over-sensitivity to sounds, lights, or textures
- Difficulty with focus and concentration
- Seeking out or avoiding certain movements or activities
- Emotional outbursts, aggressive behaviors or unusually high energy levels
π Tips for Supporting Sensory Regulation at Home:
1. πΏ Create a Calming Space: Design a cozy corner with soft lighting and soothing textures where your child can retreat to feel safe and calm.
2. π΅ Incorporate Music & Movement: Gentle music and rhythmic movement activities like dancing or swinging can help regulate sensory input.
3. π Outdoor Play: Nature is the perfect playground! Encourage playtime outside to engage all senses naturally.
4. π DIY Sensory Bins: Fill bins with rice, beans, or sand for tactile exploration that can be both fun and calming.
π€ How Occupational Therapy Can Help:
Occupational therapists are superheroes in disguise! π¦ΈββοΈ They work with children to develop personalized strategies that support sensory regulation, helping them thrive in everyday activities. Help caregivers recognize a child's signs and signals for what their sensory needs are.

"Why is my child walking on their tippy toes all the time?"
We get this question a lot!
The short answer is, it depends...
Some children walk on their tippy toes because they like the strong feeling and feedback of taking steps on the balls of their feet. Other reasons can include abnormalities with muscle tone, muscle weakness, and muscle length.
A physical therapist can help you figure out why and map out a plan to manage it.
