“Aspen Meadows, which takes its name from the nearby trees and areas open to low-growing plants, is home to a family that relishes the area’s recreational offerings, including skiing and hiking. The home’s form, construction, and interior design comprise a singular statement that rebuffs attempts to reduce it to walls and roof,” writes of a Jackson house we designed for an active family.

Design principal Logan Leachman spent over a year touring potential Jackson Hole home sites with a Michigan couple in search of the perfect fit. It was remarkable views along an extended ridge to the north, terminating in the Grand Tetons, that finally got the nod – and ultimately drove the house’s design.

Jonathan founded Jonathan L Foote AIA - Architects and Planners (now JLF Architects; his initials remain our brand) in 1979. His architecture blended into the Montana landscape as if grown from the sites themselves, framed by salvaged century-old barn timbers and floorboards. He formed and shaped where we’ve been … and where we’re headed.

The homeowners’ existing prized 14-foot-long dining table provided JLF’s Logan Leachman with architectural inspiration for this Jackson Hole home: the heirloom piece, crafted of wood repurposed from the doors of an ancient Italian church, dictated the space’s dimensions - highlighted with a grid of windows soaring into the gable end to maximize mountain views. Interior designer arranged pendants to playfully mimic stars in the night sky. As seen in the current issue of

We love a good barn, with its historic reminders of old-world craftsmanship, and we welcome the opportunity to preserve the form as a prevalent architectural structure, repurposed for modern uses. Check out our latest ANVIL Blog post titled “Noble Barns.”

Together with design-build partner , we approached the complete renovation of a Park City log house, with the intent to resize the interior spaces while modernizing the outdated aesthetic. Giant log columns were removed and wood beams replaced and streamlined with vaulted steel trusses layered over an earthy gray reclaimed-plank ceiling in the living room.

Centered in a courtyard, the main entry soars with a glass-and-steel atrium that allows daylight to flood the house. Although the palette of materials seems traditional—wood, stacked stone, and glass—the way in which these elements come together is decidedly contemporary. – from a chapter in our book “Foundations” about a Jackson Hole project we call “Shoot for the Stars.”
