Rebates and Resilience: Lessons from a Marshall Fire Rebuild
This 1,700‑sq‑ft post-Marshall Fire rebuild was designed to solve multiple challenges: wildfire risk, guest suite, aging-in-place, and a steep hillside site.
A cantilevered pavilion turns a tricky slope into a design feature while framing sweeping Foothills and Flatirons views. Inside, vaulted ceilings, exposed wood beams, and a bifold door maximize daylight and indoor-outdoor connection, all without sacrificing performance or budget. And while not Passive House certified, the design prioritizes a high-performance envelope, including fire-resilient walls using autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC).
Come hear how fire-wise strategies drove the design, and how utility rebates made it possible. Discover how landscape and material choices serve as a buffer for the home and its neighbors. See how ENERGY STAR NextGen requirements integrate with site-driven solutions, making post-fire rebuilding more resilient—in architecture, landscape, and budget.
Kristen Uitto, AIA, LEED AP, CPHC, is a principal at our firm with more than 20 years of experience designing housing at all cost levels, including single-family, multifamily, affordable housing, and cohousing. As a principal, she has expanded her work to include deep energy retrofits, eco-tenant finishes, and community master planning, with a strong focus on building science, resilience, and sustainable design.

Caddis Collaborative embraces the actively evolving field of human-centered design. Read our five-part blog series to learn how and why we focus on human-centered design and how we are incorporating what neuroscience teaches us about how design choices affect the human experience of the built environment, creating housing for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, designing for children, and designing for those who have experienced trauma. We encourage you to join us to move forward to a more inclusive, belonging way of being and living. Link in bio!
