Meet Nainika Gupta, a senior studying environmental engineering with minors in business and leadership at CU Boulder!

Nainika’s research has taken her from studying firn aquifers and ice sheets through remote sensing in Antarctica to developing data-driven methods for understanding how extreme weather affects power outages.

Although these projects may look very different, both focus on understanding environmental change and creating more resilient systems. At CU Boulder, Nainika has combined engineering with atmospheric science, climate research and leadership to pursue solutions with real-world impact.

Meet Patrick Wiecko, a fifth-year PhD student in environmental engineering at CU Boulder!

Working with Professor Daven Henze, Patrick studies how changes in air pollution affect global health. His modeling helps quantify the human health benefits of reducing pollutants such as nitrogen oxides produced through fossil fuel combustion.

Originally trained in chemical engineering, Patrick discovered an interest in air quality research and chose CU Boulder for its welcoming faculty, collaborative research environment and active graduate student community.

Congratulations to CU Boulder environmental engineering researcher Tess Eidem on receiving her first NIH R01 grant!

The five-year award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute will support research into airborne hazards facing workers in cannabis cultivation and manufacturing.

After working in the cannabis industry and seeing colleagues develop respiratory symptoms, Eidem returned to academia to address a major gap in occupational health research. Her team will study how cannabis dust, allergens and mold affect the lungs and immune system, helping build the evidence needed to create safer workplaces.

The award will also fund new research positions in Eidem’s lab and support collaborations from CU Boulder, CU Anschutz and the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

What started with two old military trailers has grown into one of the nation’s most recognized collegiate recycling programs.

In 1976, a small group of CU Boulder students began collecting and sorting newspapers and aluminum cans across campus. This program was maintained largely through volunteer effort, creativity and determination.

Today, CU Recycling employs approximately 50 student staff members, works with around 100 volunteers each year and continues advancing CU Boulder’s waste-reduction and sustainability goals.

The program’s 50-year history shows how student-led action can grow into lasting change across an entire campus.
