The most important question to ask any EdTech vendor right now is not whether their AI tutors students. It is what the AI does when a student simply asks for the answer.

That one design choice decides whether AI builds capability or quietly replaces it. An Education Week piece this month argued what good teachers already know: students grow through struggle and relationships, not through information delivery. We built Socrat around Socratic dialogue for that reason. It asks questions, tracks where students get stuck, and tells instructors before a student falls too far behind.

Giving a student a login is not the same as giving them a fair shot.

A community college president argues the digital divide has a successor: the AI divide. It is not about who can access the tools. It is about whether students can use them well enough to turn them into real outcomes. A free account closes the access gap and nothing else. The students who feel this most are the ones community colleges exist to serve.

85 percent of graduating students use AI tools. The share of job postings that require AI skills nearly doubled in a year. Those two numbers do not line up.

That gap is a workforce credential problem most institutions are not naming yet. New work from the University of Virginia points to the cause. AI competency is not absorbed in a workshop. It develops by doing. CTE already runs on that model, where students demonstrate skills rather than just study them. Putting an AI tutor in a classroom does not automatically spread help more evenly.

A new study from NC State and Carnegie Mellon analyzed 1.4 million student-system interactions and found that teachers using AI tutoring tools kept circling back to the same students they had already helped. The technology worked. The limit was human attention. One teacher, 28 students, 50 minutes, and help flows to the familiar faces. AI tutoring should relieve that arithmetic, not reproduce it, by reaching the quiet student the moment they stumble.

The four-year degree has lost its monopoly on the hiring decision. More than 90% of employers now prefer candidates who hold a microcredential, and nearly half of companies are expected to drop degree requirements for key roles this year.

The market has stopped asking where you studied and started asking what you can prove you can do. That is the model Career and Technical Education has run for years, linking learning to industry certifications employers already recognize. The catch is that a credential only counts when there is real, demonstrated competency behind it.

New Coursera data from more than 4,200 faculty and students shows the adoption debate is over. More than half say their institution is unprepared, and three quarters report no formal AI policy. People are improvising every day with tools that were built to hand over finished answers, not to teach. We built Socrat the other way, Socratic by default and visible to instructors through mastery tracking, and we are studying whether that closes the gap before we claim it does.
