Designing a Mars Thermos π‘οΈ
Using the engineering design process, students design a βMars Thermosβ β with everyday materials β that keeps a small amount of water from changing more than 5Β°F over 10 minutes. Through this process, students explore heat transfer and basic thermodynamics while building scientific inquiry, data collection, and mathematical analysis skills.
β This curriculum aligns with Next Generation Science Standards!

The Mars Sample Return mission is incredibly complex and involves multiple spacecraft, robotic systems, and international teams working together πͺ In this design engineering challenge, students work as part of an engineering team to help complete a simulated MSR mission.
π Mars Sample Return Coding Challenge: teachengineering.org/activities/view/jpl-3049-mars-sample-return-coding-challenge
Like real engineers at NASA, each group designs and codes a microdevice to accomplish one essential task, then the class collaborates to integrate all components into one fully functioning mission!
