Designing a Mars Thermos 🌡️

Using the engineering design process, students design a “Mars Thermos” — with everyday materials — that keeps a small amount of water from changing more than 5°F over 10 minutes. Through this process, students explore heat transfer and basic thermodynamics while building scientific inquiry, data collection, and mathematical analysis skills.

➕ This curriculum aligns with Next Generation Science Standards!

The Mars Sample Return mission is incredibly complex and involves multiple spacecraft, robotic systems, and international teams working together 🪐 In this design engineering challenge, students work as part of an engineering team to help complete a simulated MSR mission.

Like real engineers at NASA, each group designs and codes a microdevice to accomplish one essential task, then the class collaborates to integrate all components into one fully functioning mission!

In this hands-on design challenge, students explore capacitance and capacitors by designing, building, and optimizing a capacitor prototype 🔋 Throughout this process, they apply the engineering design process, make predictions, and compare outcomes to their expectations.
