Our executive director writes: Stressful here today in Boulder County with the very strong winds. Too reminiscent of December 2021, when the Marshall Fire took my home. Forever grateful I was home that day and able to evacuate my beloved Jack and Lura. Began work within a week with my teammates at Animal Help Now to develop a pet evacuation app. It's up and running. Please take 10 minutes to download and set up. Something like 85% of USians live in areas that are disaster prone.
Those most traumatized by the Marshall Fire were those who couldn't get home to evacuate their pets.

Do you live in an apartment building?
Our hearts go out to all those impacted by the devastating tragedy in Hong Kong. We wish our app were available in the region, and we continue to search for human service organizations to deploy our technology to save the lives of humans who cannot self evacuate.

Animal Help Now is psyched to be speaking about Pet Help & Rescue at the upcoming International Association of Emergency Managers annual meeting. Our topic: Evacuation of Household Animals Home Alone When Disasters Threaten/Strike: An App for That
Abstract: The Marshall Fire (Boulder County, CO, December 2021) claimed the lives of two humans and an estimated one thousand dogs, cats and other pets. This tragedy showed once again that when disasters strike and we are not home, our trusted neighbors who are home represent our best chance for having our pets evacuated. This is the premise of the new Pet Help & Rescue app (PHaR), developed in the aftermath of the fire. By design, PHaR evacuation communications are separate and distinct from the chaos of calls, texts, and social media notifications that occur when evacuations are underway. PHaR represents a revolutionary upgrade to the "Give your neighbor a key" approach to pet evacuation and gives pets and other dependent animals their best chance yet of surviving when disasters strike. The app was designed with guidance from experts in the animal disaster management field by the nonprofit Animal Help Now, which has a successful 14-year history of app development in the emergency space. PHaR launched in July 2024. This presentation will cover PHaR’s role in disaster preparedness and response, lessons learned after its first year, and plans for the future, including efforts to employ its technology for disabled and elderly humans.

Don't be average. Average doesn't prepare for disasters. Average thinks it'll never happen to them.

We are so grateful (and a bit relieved) that emergency managers are seeing the value in our new PHaR - Pet Help and Rescue pet evacuation app. We've presented to the City of Louisville (CO) and a number of emergency-focused nonprofits. We'll be presenting in November at the International Association of Emergency Managers annual conference. And this Saturday (9/14) we're presenting at the Town of Superior (CO) Ready Rover event. You don't need to be a resident of Superior to watch this event, which will be simulcast online. Hope to see you there! We expect to present at around 11:00 Mountain time (1pm Eastern).
