A twice exceptional standout among faculty - News 06/08/2026

For more than a decade, Dr. Nora Kenworthy has shared her expertise in public health through her research and teaching as a professor at the University of Washington Bothell’s School of Nursing & Health Studies. Her research has had considerable impact — shaping publicly engaged conversations about healthcare, politics, rights and inequities across diverse global settings.

This year, she was named the recipient of not one but two different university accolades: the Distinguished Research, Scholarship & Creative Activities Award and the Outstanding Public Service Award.

“What distinguishes Nora most is the spirit she brings to this work: one of humility, curiosity and care. She doesn’t enter communities as an expert but as a partner and listener,” said Marcus Harrison Green, founder and publisher of the South Seattle Emerald.

The 2026 summer outlook includes above average temperatures and below average precipitation. That, paired with lower-than-normal snowpack this winter — and Washington has all the makings for significant wildland fire potential.

In advance of the upcoming wildfire season, Dr. Dan Jaffe shares research insights and tips for how you can protect yourself from the impacts of smoke pollution.

He will also speak on the topic at an upcoming Science Pub Talk at McMenamins Anderson School in downtown Bothell on June 9.

For their 10th annual hackathon, students were visionary innovators — looking to shape tomorrow through creativity, technology and collaboration.

“What makes hackathons such a great format is they can cater to a large audience,” said Jonah Uellenberg, a senior majoring in Computer Science & Software Engineering. “You’ll have people who want to leave with a cool project, others who enjoy the competition and meeting new people, and those who want to network and learn something new through a workshop — and it all comes together in a single event.”

In the late 1800s, Dr. Reuben Chase, Bothell’s first doctor, lived and worked out of the Chase House, serving as the city’s first hospital. Today, this historic home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and houses the UW Bothell/Cascadia Grounds Team.

A little history, still growing on campus.

From tabletop and roleplaying to computer games and sports, gaming in all forms has long been a favorite pastime for Dr. Eric Stoerm Anderson. It’s more than just a hobby, though. It’s also what led him to pursue a career in nursing and later academia, where he now weaves gaming into his teaching.

“I’ve always kind of seen the world through a gaming lens,” said Anderson, associate teaching professor in the University of Washington Bothell’s School of Nursing & Health Studies. “I recognized the inherent gameyness in the world and that life in general is a sort of game. There are rules, and if you can cleverly use those rules to your benefit, you can do well.”

In his latest course, Anderson explored the utility of games in mental health, education, leadership and professional practice.

As those most likely to experience extreme climate events during their lifetime, younger generations are feeling the burden, and it has already taken a toll. Many youth under the age of 25 — including children as young as preschool age — report having climate anxiety as well as fear and hopelessness for the future.

Younger people also tend to be the most engaged in climate activism. And at the University of Washington Bothell, students now have a new opportunity to channel their passion for climate issues into their personal, academic and career goals through the recently launched minor in Climate Change & Society.
