Plant of the week:

Pink anemone Clematis - Clematis montana 'Rubens'

Japanese anemones are one of my favourite flowers, i just love the shape and color of them and maybe that's why Clematis montana is my favourite of all Clematis. How amazing is that it is also fragrant?

This fast-growing climbing vine bursts into a breathtaking display of soft pink, lightly fragrant flowers each spring—perfect for covering trellises, fences, or walls with effortless charm.

Care Tips:
• Light: Thrives in full sun to partial shade (best flowering with at least 6 hours of sun)
• Soil: Well-drained, rich soil
• Water: Needs supplemental watering

Pruning Tips:
• Prune lightly after flowering to control size and shape
• Remove dead or weak stems to encourage healthy growth
• Avoid heavy pruning—this variety blooms on old wood

Why you’ll love it:
Low maintenance, vigorous growth, and a romantic cascade of blooms—Clematis ‘Rubens’ is the perfect statement plant for any garden.

Plant of the week: Osmanthus burkwoodii - Burkwood Osmanthus

This fantastic evergreen shrub if well suited for low maintenance landscape. It is hardy and drought tolerant, thrives both in sun and in part shade. It will not dominate the landscape and takes pruning well.

Osmanthus burkwoodii is wonderful plant to be used as background to more showy plants you have in your garden. It does very well as a hedge and screening plant. It is very versatile and delightfully fragrant.

Plant of the week: Creeping Phlox

I love creeping phlox for it's fragrance and fast growth. It makes one of the best groundcovers and it's evergreen foliage is pretty all year round. Bunnies seem to leave it alone too which is important in my garden which bunnies visit on regular basis.

Known for its star-shaped blooms in shades of pink, purple, blue, and white, this hardy plant spreads beautifully over slopes, rock gardens, and borders.

Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, creeping phlox is both drought-tolerant and low maintenance once established. It’s perfect for softening stone walls, filling gaps between stepping stones, or adding a splash of color to garden edges.

Interplant creeping phlox with your bulbs and create beautiful composition of color in the spring.

Creeping phlox is difficult to grow from seed and it's usually grown through propagation.

Rose Violet's Pride (Floribunda) 02/09/2026

Plant of the week:

Rose 'Violet's Pride'

I found this Rose while strolling through impressive International Rose Test Garden in Portland, Oregon. I visited it in late August and from all the roses blooming at that time this was the most fragrant one. It has the traditional old damask rose fragrance, beautiful abundant blooms and dark green foliage. It is a true hidden gem because i never heard of it before and i read about roses a lot. I fell in love with this one and upon arriving home i made sure i will have it in my offering this spring. This rose was developed by Christian Bédard and patented by Weeks Roses.
Just added it to the offering on my website!

Rose Violet's Pride (Floribunda) Rose ‘Violet’s Pride’ Rose ‘Violet’s Pride’ is a striking and elegant rose variety admired for its rich violet-purple blooms and classic rose fragrance. 2023 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map | USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map 01/26/2026

Word about hardiness zones

The USDA hardiness zones are based on average annual extreme minimum winter temperature. What does it really mean?

Here in Bothell, WA i am in hardiness zone 9a. Our average minimum temperatures are 20-25°F. When you buy a plant hardy to zone 9a it will survive those temperatures but usually get damaged by lower temperatures then that.

Now most local nurseries (from our USDA hardiness zone 9a/8b) (including my nursery and all local nurseries from Sky Nursery to Flower World) will sell plants that are hardy to minimum zone 7.
That means every plant sold by us will be hardy to temperatures 0-5F. That is because on rare occasions we will have temperatures dropping to 0F.

So when do you really need to protect your plants?

Note hardiness zones on plants you purchase. Especially those hardy to zone 7 and above.
Protect them when the temperature drops below the avarage annual minimum for that hardiness zone.
For plants hardy to USDA 7 that would be temperature below 0F.

Example of plants hardy to zone 7:
Gardenia, Jasmine, Daphne 'Perfume Princess', Evergreen Huckleberry. All those plants will survive temperatures 0F but can get damaged by lower temperatures.

Most hydrangeas are hardy to zone 4. That means they will survive temperatures of -30F but can get damaged by lower temperatures.

Improved Meyer Lemon is hardy to zone 9 so it will survive temperatures of 20F but can get damaged by lower temperatures.

End note:

USDA hardiness zones apply to plants that are in the ground. Plants in containers can freeze through and even hardy plants might suffer damage from the frozen roots.

Plant of the week: Sarcococca Confusa - Fragrant Sweetbox

This is wonderful winter flowering plant with fantastic fragrance. The little white flowers that show up on masse on the plant produce great smell that lingers in the air for a long time.

It is a good idea to cut a few branches and bring them inside so the warm air carries the wonderful smell around the house.

It is evergreen, low growing and great plant for shade. Fantastic candidate for underplanting a larger more showy tree/shrub or planting closer to the house where the compact size of this plant fits perfectly.

Plant close to the pathway or door where you will pass it on the way in and out of the house and will not miss the great fragrance it offers.
