What started out as a "little bit of a joke," became an unlikely go-to transportation method for more than a thousand Scottish soccer supporters attending the country's FIFA World Cup opener at Gillette Stadium. Trying to avoid the steep train prices the MBTA is charging for a roundtrip ride between Boston and Foxborough on top of the international travel money they'd already shelled out, Scotland's kilt-cladded Tartan Army fans descended upon Providence over the weekend and rented out dozens of school buses sourced from across New England.
Organizers charged fans $38 per seat on the buses (less than half the price of the commuter rail fare). The funds went toward the cost of transportation, a few alcoholic beverages and water provided to passengers on board, as well as more than $16,000 in charitable donations to local organizations, including $10,000 for Providence's Hasbro Children's Hospital.
