The FDA is now requiring cat & dog food manufacturers – especially those using raw/uncooked poultry or cattle ingredients - to reassess their food safety plans for highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1/bird flu).

Why? Recent outbreaks have shown H5N1 can transmit to pets through contaminated raw food, causing severe illness or even death in cats (and milder cases in some dogs).

Cat & Dog Food Manufacturers Required to Consider H5N1 in Food Safety FDA has determined that it is necessary for manufacturers of cat and dog foods to reanalyze their food safety plans to include HPAI virus (H5N1).

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for Credelio (lotilaner) chewable tablets, concluding that, based on the scientific evidence available, it is reasonable to believe that Credelio may be effective in treating New World screwworm (NWS) infestations in dogs and puppies and the known and potential benefits of the product outweigh its known and potential risks.

This is the first time the FDA has issued an EUA for an animal drug as well as the first drug authorized by the FDA for treating NWS in a companion animal species.

In fact, all 50 state veterinary associations, plus those representing DC and Puerto Rico, have now indicated their formal opposition to the MLP.
