The Face as Canvas: MassQing workshop with Daniel Callahan 04/28/2026

Next month, join me at the Roxbury Library for The Face as Canvas: MassQing Workshop—a free, interactive experience centered on my signature practice of “MassQing.”

In this powerful and personal 2-hour workshop, you’ll learn how MassQing uses the human face as a canvas and face paint as a tool for reflection and transformation. Inspired by global body-marking traditions, I’ll guide you in designing and painting your own “MassQ” to explore identity, personal story, and creative self-expression.

Open to all ages and family-friendly (children 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent/guardian).

Free, with RSVP recommended (space is limited): http://www.bit.ly/massq-bpl

All materials are provided, including hypoallergenic, water-based face paint that’s safe for sensitive skin and fully washable. Brushes will be sanitized.

This program is funded by a grant from the Fellowes Athenaeum Trust Fund of the Boston Public Library.

Accessibility: The Roxbury Branch, located in Nubian Square, is wheelchair accessible and easy to reach by public transportation. Free street parking is also available.

I’ve always been interested in how my work can facilitate mental health and wellbeing in others (because that’s actually one of the main reasons I engage in it myself).

This past Wednesday, I facilitated a MassQing workshop at Emmanuel College ( ) for their art therapy students. We explored how MassQing can facilitate inner work through outer creativity.

Special thanks to Art Therapist & Mental Health Counselor Kimberly Knowles, her wonderful students, and the rest of the faculty and staff of the Emmanuel Arts Department for the opportunity.

We’re taking it back to Pangea. 🌍

In my latest Substack, I reflect on my recent trip to West Africa with my partner, along with all the history that lead us to that moment, and how the past continues to reverberate into our present day.
