When Winston-Salem shut Black riders out of its trolley system in 1926, 21 Black entrepreneurs didn’t wait for change… they built it.
In just 30 days, they pooled their resources, raised $100,000, and launched what became the Safe Bus Company… a business rooted in dignity, independence, and community.
What started as a response to exclusion quickly grew into something extraordinary.
At its peak, Safe Bus operated more than 80 buses and transported over 8,000 riders a day… becoming the largest Black-owned transportation company in the world.
It wasn’t just a business… it was a statement.
They even expanded beyond buses, acquiring a cab company and creating a full Black-owned transportation network in Winston-Salem.
But history has its ironies.
When the city finally desegregated, the same system they built to survive exclusion was asked to serve everyone. And because of lingering racial attitudes, ridership dropped by 60%.
By 1972, the company was sold… a powerful reminder that progress has not always come without sacrifice.
Still… their legacy remains.
Because they didn’t just build buses… they built opportunity, pride, and a blueprint for ownership in the face of adversity.
