Not all TMJ disorders are the same.
Sometimes they can come all of a sudden without you noticing.
This is the story of one of my patients.
She was never aware of jaw clicking but suddenly in her mid 30s started having episodes of jaw locking.
No pain, no headaches, just locking at random moments.
Dry needling of her masseter muscles with another PT did help but it wasn't enough to stop the locking. She also didn't know why it was happening.
We did a thorough assessment and found that her TMJ was hypermobile. Providing less stability between her disc and jaw bones.
But for years her jaw muscles were doing their best to help.
One day her TMJ wasn't getting the support it needed from her muscles anymore.
Leading to a lateral/medical disc displac with reduction with interm locking.
Our goal now is to engage all the muscles around her joint (not just her masseter) to support her jaw and prevent locking.
If you have a hypermobile jaw, there are solutions and preventative options.
One tool to knowing if you are hypermobile is if you can open your mouth wider than 3 of your fingers or you can move your teeth side to side >10mm.
Do you think your jaw is hypermobile?

Sometimes, itās the little things that make the biggest difference.
This patient took our advice and took great care of their nasal passages! š
Winter heating can dry out indoor air, making it harder to breathe gently through your nose. āļø
When nasal breathing is difficult, we tend to breathe through our mouthsāwhich can strain your jaw, face, and head, potentially worsening headaches. š¤
Simple solutions like using a humidifier to keep your room at 40ā60% humidity, hydrating nasal sprays, or even nasal strips can help support gentle nasal breathingāand in turn, a headache-free head!
At Revive TMJ, we go beyond the TMJ to provide a holistic approach to your health and comfort. If youāre struggling with chronic headaches, weāre always happy to chat and answer your questions!

Your jaw is supported byĀ wayĀ more muscles than the ones we usually think about.
Most people only think of the masseter and temporalis ā but your jaw relies on an entire team of deeper and smaller muscles, including:
lateral pterygoid, medial pterygoid, digastrics, suprahyoids, infrahyoids, buccinator, orbicularis oris, genioglossusĀ and more.
All of these muscles help you open, close, stabilize, chew, speak, and keep your jaw moving smoothly.
When theyāre imbalanced you can feel:
š jaw pain
š clicking
š muscle tension
š headaches
Working retrain muscle balance is one of the best ways to support your jaw muscles ā and find long-term relief.
Save this for later if youāre dealing with jaw issues š
A new year is just around the corner and better sleep can be your resolution ā just ask V.K., who finally sleeps peacefully with his partner thanks to reduced snoring.
